Kellogg Foundation Names New Trustee

BATTLE CREEK, Michigan, December 20, 2002 – The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has chosen Fred P. Keller of Alto, Michigan, as the newest member of its Board of Trustees.

“Fred Keller is a highly accomplished business and civic leader, and it’s an honor to have him join our Board,” said William C. Richardson, Kellogg Foundation president and CEO. “His innovative leadership style, and commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainable business, makes him an excellent fit for the Foundation.”

Keller was elected to the Foundation’s 10-member Board on Thursday. His renewable, three-year term of service begins immediately. Keller replaces Trustee Chris T. Christ of Battle Creek, Michigan, who had served on the Foundation’s Board since 1984.

The 58-year-old Keller is chairman and CEO of Cascade Engineering, a Grand Rapids-based firm that he founded in 1973. Cascade Engineering develops and manufactures injection molded products for the automotive, container, home, and office markets. The Cascade family of companies, which employs more than 1,200 people in North America, Asia, and Europe, reported revenues of $215 million in 2001.

Cascade Engineering has received national acclaim for its work and family initiatives which stem from Keller’s belief that a company can only be truly successful if it does right by its employees, supports its community, and enjoys long-term sustainability.

Cascade provides employee benefits such as adoption assistance, health education, a mother’s nursing center, and a computer purchase loan program. In 2002, Cascade was named by Goodwill International as Large Employer of the Year. At a reception in 1999, Keller received the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership from the White House.

Among his other board memberships, Keller serves as a director for Meijer, Inc., the Grand Valley State University Foundation, and the Economic Club of Grand Rapids. He also chairs the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce Cultural Diversity Council. In 2001, Keller was chairman of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan YMCA’s Kids to Camp campaign.

Keller received a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and a master’s degree in business management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He holds an honorary doctorate of industry from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation was established in 1930 “to help people help themselves through the practical application of knowledge and resources to improve their quality of life and that of future generations.” Its programming activities center around the common vision of a world in which each person has a sense of worth; accepts responsibility for self, family, community, and societal well-being; and has the capacity to be productive, and to help create nurturing families, responsive institutions, and healthy communities.

To achieve the greatest impact, the Foundation targets its grants toward specific areas. These include: health; food systems and rural development; youth and education; and philanthropy and volunteerism. Within these areas, attention is given to exploring learning opportunities in leadership; information and communication technology; capitalizing on diversity; and social and economic community development. Grants are concentrated in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the southern African countries of Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.
