Mothers & More Recognizes Cascade Engineering for its Support of Working Mothers

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan, September 23, 2002 – The Grand Rapids Chapter of Mothers & More will honor Cascade Engineering for its support of mothers in the workforce during a special awards presentation on October 2, 2002.

The non-profit support and advocacy network will present its 2002 Business Award to Cascade Engineering, a Grand Rapids-based manufacturing company, in recognition of its PHASES program. PHASES, which stands for Providing, Health, Activities, Safety and Enrichment Services, helps employees maintain a successful balance between their work and family responsibilities as they enter new phases of their lives. The program offers Cascade employees a variety of childcare-related benefits, including baby beepers, a childcare hotline, adoption assistance and flexible work scheduling.

Mothers & More will present the award to the senior management team of Cascade Engineering at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 5251 36th Street SE.

“We are pleased to honor Cascade Engineering for its commitment to the special needs of new families and working mothers,” said Cheryl Rose, co-leader at Mothers & More. “Cascade offers innovative programs and policies that support employees in their quest to achieve balance between work and home life.”

“By addressing the childcare and scheduling needs of workers who are parents, employers such as Cascade can reduce absenteeism, stress, and staff turnover, while increasing productivity, morale and job satisfaction. We applaud their efforts and are pleased to honor them with our 2002 Business Award.”

Cascade’s PHASES program takes into account the needs of employees at different phases in their lives by offering:
  • Adoption assistance: Monetary benefits provided based on the number of children, and if the child has special needs.
  • Baby beepers: Pagers are given to employees who are imminently expecting a child (within six weeks of due date) at no cost to the employee.
  • Private lactation site
  • Childcare referral: Internal childcare specialists coordinate with 4C Kent Regional Community Coordinated ChildCare to assist employees in locating appropriate childcare.
  • Childcare hotline: Internal assistance is given to employees in need of emergency, weekend or full-time childcare options.
  • Flexible, part-time and telecommuting work schedules: All full-time employees are eligible for flextime consideration, which is designed to accommodate family caregiving schedules.
  • Elder Care counseling and referral program

Mothers & More is a non-profit organization focused on the special needs of “sequencing mothers” – those women who alter their participation in the workplace over the course of their active parenting years. With chapters across the country, Mothers & More recognizes the needs of the growing number of mothers who move in and out of paid employment or opt for a variety of flexible work arrangements in order to successfully balance their work and family responsibilities. This fluid work pattern, which occurs over a number of years and at various stages of motherhood, is known as “sequencing.”

Mothers & More instituted the Business Awards program in 1994 as a way of recognizing employers that invest in programs and policies that benefit employees with children. The Business Award for Employer is given to an organization that provides programs such as onsite daycare, job-sharing, flextime, and generous maternity and paternity leave.
